One of the greatest things about writing is that you can do it nearly anywhere. There is a large variety of mediums you can use to write, and nearly endless places you can go to do the writing. Everyone has their own idea of what makes a writing spot cozy and comfortable, but I thought I would share some of my absolute favorites. In all of these places, I prefer using my trusty MacBook Pro.
- The Porch
I am lucky enough to have a front porch with enough space for two rocking chairs. The porch faces the street in front of my house and is hidden on the sides by trees. This gives me a view of what is in front of me, while still letting me feel like I’m not being stared at or something. When the weather is ideal, a crisp 50-60 degrees is ideal for me, nothing beats rocking on my porch with a hot cup of coffee. In the morning, the sounds of the city waking up along with the birds chirping provide a nice background noise. At night, it is nearly silent save for the occasional car driving by.
- The Local Coffee Shop
No surprise here, right? Coffee shops have been a favorite place for readers, writers, meetings, etc. for a very long time. So what is so great about them? For one, there is coffee on tap so you never have to worry about running out. You are also surrounded by other people that are working on their own projects, even though they aren’t all necessarily writing. That kind of atmosphere tends to help your creative juices flow. The background noise is nice, since there are usually at least a few conversations going on, and they mix with the sounds and smells of the coffee bar to create a great vibe. Too noisy for you? Just find a smaller or less busy place if you can. The atmosphere in different coffee shops varies greatly.
- The Library
For those that value quiet, the library might be the place for you. I especially love going when I really need to be able to concentrate and focus. As an added bonus, you can pick up some new books to read while you are there! When I decide it is getting too quiet for my liking, I throw in my earphones and stream music while I tap away on the keyboard. With NaNoWriMo only days away, I know I’ll be spending more time than normal at the libraries in my city. There are a lot of write-ins where like-minded writers will be meeting up and working on their novels together, and I am planning on being there for several of them!
- My couch
I’m going to return home for what is definitely the most convenient place for me. It is temperature controlled year round, and has been carefully built to provide a comfortable place for me to write. My couch! In order for this to be ideal, you need to put some thought and planning on your writing setup. I have a comfy couch with an ottoman in front that I can put my feet up on. Once I am in place I drape a big furry blanket over me and put my MacBook over that. I like having some background noise, so I’ll usually have Netflix running on the TV. In fact, most of the TV I watch is done at the same time as I’m writing. My progress might be slower, but it works. Right now I’m watching the final episode of Black Mirror on Netflix, which is amazing! I highly recommend it.
What is your favorite place to write? I’m always up for trying new ideas!
